SOME all-purpose cleaners contain ‘sudsing agents’ which can react with the nitrites (preservatives) in other cleaning products to form carcinogenic compounds. Others contain Butyl cellosolve, which is thought to cause damage to the nervous system.

ALTERNATIVE: Ocean Saver Cleaning Pods (£6.99, ocean-saver.com) are biodegradable and re-fillable. Or try a home-made cleaner with a tablespoon of vinegar and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a bottle of water.
