Aldi hikes prices in Local store
ALdI is charging a premium for groceries at its new format Local store in London, it has emerged.
the German grocer, which prides itself on being one of the cheapest supermarkets in the country, has raised the prices by almost £1 on a basket of 24 items.
Customers at the store in Balham, south London, are paying £26.81 for the basket, compared with £25.85 across the rest of Aldi’s UK stores. A bottle of Castellore pinot grigio costs £4.19 in most Aldi stores, in contrast to £4.69 at the Local, while a 12 pack of spring water costs 10p more, at £1.59.
Aldi launched its Local format in the capital earlier this year. It is about half the size of a usual Aldi supermarket and stocks 300 fewer products.
Analyst Bryan roberts from tCC Global suggested Aldi has raised its prices to cover the higher costs of running a store in London.
An Aldi spokesman said: ‘the prices in our Balham store are notably cheaper than nearby supermarkets.’
