Freddie Starr’s body left in legal limbo
THE body of Freddie Starr is stuck in legal limbo – and the comedian could end up having a pauper’s funeral in Spain.
Starr’s passport has expired and no family members have come forward to claim his body. To be repatriated he needs the approval of his next of kin, who are expected to cover the costs.
Starr died aged 76 on Thursday of a heart attack at his home near Malaga. His body is in a hospital morgue. Housekeeper Nelly Georgieva, 47, said no family members have been in touch.
Funerals in Spain usually take place 4 hours after the body has been identified. If no one claims the body or pays for a funeral then it is cremated by the hospital, with the ashes left in a public cemetery. The grave would be unmarked, with just a serial number for identification.
