DE NIRO’S TOUGHEST ROLL
Goodfella films bagel ad in Bolton... wonder how much dough he’s getting!
HE is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation – and has two Oscars to prove it.
But Robert De Niro has landed a rather surprising new role – in a Warburtons advert filmed in Bolton. The 75-year-old appears in GoodBagels, an advert for the British bakers which sends up his role in the classic mobster film Goodfellas.
While he is used to working with A-listers such as Al Pacino, the job sees him share the limelight with the company’s chairman Jonathan Warburton.
The star plays an amalgamation of his various gangster characters in the advert, which sees him and his accomplices attempt to thwart Warburtons’ bagel sales in favour of their New York versions.
De Niro is also seen tying up security guards and relabelling the firm’s products as GoodBagels instead. The actor said: ‘It was a pleasure to fly to the UK to film this ad with the Warburtons family, and star alongside Jonathan.’
He added: ‘Getting into the bagel business has been great fun, and I hope everyone enjoys the final cut.’
Mr Warburton said: ‘As an iconic New Yorker, Robert De Niro knows his way around a bagel so it’s great to have his seal of approval.’
The advert is far from the first time the brand has enlisted a celebrity to help sell its products.
Comedian Peter Kay starred in a spoof advert called Pride and Breadjudice in 2017, while action star Sylvester Stallone parodied his most famous roles in The Deliverers in 2015.
The new advert will appear on UK TV screens from Friday.
