MOST of the souvenirs on sale at Britain’s stately homes were described as ‘absolute trash’ by historic house owners in London last night. The Duke of Bedford, whose Woburn Abbey is the biggest crowd-puller, said: ‘I quite agree that the majority of the souvenirs are deplorable, but so is the taste of the people.’

MAY 13, 1971

WHEN Mick Jagger arrived for his wedding at the Town Hall in St Tropez, 45 minutes late, there were the scuffles, swearing and disillusion you’d expect from a Rolling Stone. Jagger, in pale green suit and painted sneakers, refused to enter because of the crush of pressmen, microphones and cameras. Bianca wore a white silk maxi suit by Yves St Laurent, split to the waist.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

ZOE WANAMAKER, 70. The New York-born English actress played Susan Harper in BBC sitcom My Family. After playing Madam Hooch in Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, she complained the pay was ‘terrible’ and called the producers ‘ notoriously mean’. She didn’t appear in the sequels. RICHARD MADELEY, 63. The Good Morning Britain presenter found fame alongside wife Judy Finnigan on This Morning and Richard & Judy. They met at Granada TV when both were married to other people and Madeley wooed her by making a ‘tastily ghastly’ tuna pasta bake for their first date. It included a tin of chicken soup and a tin of mushroom soup, and crisps on top.

TREVOR BAYLIS (19372018). The London-born inventor who came up with the wind-up radio — named among the 50 greatest inventions in British history — said he never made his fortune from it: ‘Anyone in possession of a good idea is at the mercy of jackals wanting a piece of the action. In business, basic decency has no cash value.’ DAME DAPHNE DU MAURIER (19071989). The English novelist and playwright had three of her works adapted into films by Alfred Hitchcock: The Birds, Jamaica Inn and Rebecca. It was not until 1994 that a biography revealed that although du Maurier stayed with her husband, she had several lesbian affairs.
