Maguire expects more bad blood at Pompey

- JASON MELLOR

FAMILIARITY seems to have bred nothing but contempt between Sunderland and Portsmouth. Thursday’s second-leg at Fratton Park promises to be another bruising affair after the two sets of players had to be separated at the final whistle for the second time in the last fortnight. ‘It’s a battle of who wants it,’ said Chris Maguire, the Sunderland substitute who volleyed a memorable second-half winner. The simmering bad blood between the promotion rivals was evident. The Scot added: ‘Both teams want it and we’ve played each other numerous times now this season, so we felt that we owed them one. ‘We’re halfway there and it’s a great step in the right direction. We go there full of confidence.’ Sunderland plan to appeal the red card awarded to Alim Ozturk shortly after Maguire’s winning goal for a crude challenge on Gareth Evans. But Pompey skipper Evans said: ‘It was a blatant red card. If he’d not taken me out I was through on goal.’
