The mask slips... and Labour is for Remain
FOLLOWING the seismic shock of Britain voting to leave the EU in 2016, Labour’s position was crystal clear: To honour the referendum result.
The promise to implement Brexit was a centrepiece of the following year’s election manifesto – helping torpedo Theresa May’s fragile majority.
Since then, Jeremy Corbyn (a lifelong Eurosceptic) has pursued a risible policy of ‘constructive ambiguity’ – otherwise known as an utter unwillingness to get off the fence.
Does anyone have an inkling where Labour actually stands on the biggest issue facing the country? Yesterday, a clue emerged from the dishonest fug. Deputy leader Tom Watson admitted the party now stood for Remain.
No doubt that raised eyebrows in the party’s Leave heartlands, where Nigel Farage is being greeted like a messiah.
Increasingly, Labour’s commitment to thrashing out a Brexit deal with the Tories appears a cynical ploy. The talks teeter at the abyss. At least Mrs May (rightly or wrongly) engaged in good faith.
Mr Corbyn simply wants a general election, and to hell with the national interest. Unfortunately, thanks to the turmoil engulfing the Tories, he edges ever closer to No 10 – despite being singularly unfit for office.
Yes, his economic policies draw loud cheers from idealistic liberal crowds, but they are straight out of the hard-Left socialist handbook. Before long, there would be a run on the pound, investment flight and surging joblessness... and Britain would rapidly become an economic basket-case.
For that reason, we urge Tory supporters, even in these febrile times, to stand firm and not desert the party.
