There is no doubt that the four european club competitio­n semifinals made for thrilling viewing, with liverpool thrashing Barcelona, Tottenham’s breathtaki­ng second half comeback against Ajax, Arsenal’s dominance over Valencia and Chelsea holding their nerve in a penalty shoot-out to see off frankfurt.

But was it really a good week for the Premier league? Of the 44 players who started those semi-final, second leg matches, only eight were english.

Clubs have so much money that they throw it at glamorous foreign imports in the belief it will buy them success. But there is so much talent to be found here in Britain if only we look for it.
