Tears of trainee GP who faked prescription to get antibiotics

-

A TRAINEE doctor sobbed yesterday as a tribunal heard how she faked a prescription for antibiotics because she was too embarrassed to request them herself.

Ashleigh Williams, 28, put down a colleague’s name to acquire the tablets – claiming they were for her younger sister who had lost hers.

She was caught out after the pharmacist became suspicious and contacted a senior colleague who said they could not recall signing off the prescription.

Dr Williams, pictured, then admitted the amoxicillin tablets were in fact for herself to treat an unspecified medical condition.

The trainee GP was charged with dishonesty and misconduct after reporting herself to the General Medical Council over the incident at Burnley General Hospital in Lancashire in March last year.

At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester, Dr Williams sobbed as she apologised for her mistake, calling it completely out of character. She added: ‘It has had a massive impact on myself and my confidence.’

Dr Williams’s supervisor, Dr Mark Dziobon, praised her as ‘a high flyer’ and ‘one of the best I have had’. The tribunal also heard that there were no concerns that Dr Williams posed a risk to patient safety. The hearing continues.
