How Labour’s plans will affect you

Hundreds of thousands of investors were given National Grid shares as part of the privatisation process in 1990s when the state-owned Central Electricity Generating Board was split up. Many savers hold Grid shares today through an investment fund, wealth advisor or tracker fund. National Grid is part of the FTSE 100 index of Britain’s biggest listed companies – so the odds are, if you are invested in a fund which holds shares in UK firms, you’ll own a part of the Grid. Millions of UK pension pots are invested in Britain’s energy networks, including National Grid. Legal & General Investment Management, for example, is one of the UK’s biggest pension fund managers and a top ten investor in the National Grid. Even if your pension fund doesn’t directly hold a stake in the business, it may well put money in an investment fund which does.
