WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOUR LEGACY
FACEBOOK: In Settings, you can appoint a Legacy Contact who can inform Facebook about your death and either set up a memorial page or delete your account. They cannot read your messages. If you know that you want your account to be deleted after you die, go to Settings and click on ‘Manage Account’. Scroll down and click ‘Request Account Deletion’ and click ‘Delete After Death’. TWITTER: The only option when someone dies is to have the account deactivated. To do this, Twitter requires an immediate family member to present a copy of their ID and a death certificate. EMAIL: Different email providers have different policies. To close a Gmail account, you will need to provide a copy of the deceased’s ID and death certificate. In ‘certain circumstances’, it also ‘provides content from a deceased user’s account’. Yahoo also offers relatives the opportunity to close an account via its website, while Microsoft requires relatives to email msrecord@microsoft.com.
