Will Theresa’s successor heed poll warning?
SoME of the biggest beasts in the political jungle joined Conservative Voice when it was set up to campaign for traditional Tory values.
David Davis and Liam Fox, two senior Brexiteers, and Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay support the group which campaigns for small government, lower taxes, radical thinking in the delivery of public services, and a more robust approach to Europe.
But a new survey by Conservative Voice shows the scale of anger among its members and of the challenge facing the next Tory leader.
A remarkable 77 per cent of the 1,300 respondents said the current Conservative Party no longer represents their views. Asked who they would vote for at the next General Election, only four per cent said the Tories, and a staggering 90 per cent said Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party — a figure that rose to 95 per cent for Thursday’s European elections.
Don Porter, a founder member of Conservative Voice, which was set up in 2012, told me: ‘These are by far the worst polling figures Conservative Voice has ever received from our followers.
‘Nothing short of a fundamental change in the direction of the Party and Government will recover the loss of trust and votes.’
Let’s hope that the contenders to succeed Theresa May are listening carefully.
