Athleisure trend ‘fuels liposuction’
IT’S the fashion trend that is famously unforgiving, highlighting every single bump and lump on the body.
Now ‘athleisure’ clothing has been blamed for a rise in liposuction, with the number of patients up 12 per cent last year on 2017.
Nearly 2,300 had the treatment, which sees fat removed from the thighs and buttocks, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Former president Rajiv Grover, who compiled the figures, highlighted the trend for athleisurewear – clothing designed for exercise but worn as street fashion – which is now a £3billion market in the UK.
He also pointed to the popularity of reality TV shows, including Love Island, and the willingness of celebrities such as Jane Fonda to speak openly about having work done.
In total, more than 28,000 cosmetic procedures took place in 2018, with 90 per cent of patients being female.
