Whirlwind Wallace can keep blowing hot

-

TALK about a tale of two flights. On the one over to the US PGA, Matt Wallace was cursing himself for not winning the British Masters and his behaviour in slamming his putter into the 18th green, for which he later apologised. On the one back he could reflect on his first top-three finish in a major, with only the Bash Brothers ahead of him. Here’s the thing about Wallace, though. The contentment only lasted so long. The plan today is to sit down with his team and work out how to improve. ‘I didn’t really compete because there was a guy out there playing the best golf of his life,’ said the 29-year-old Londoner. ‘But I’m in third place to Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson, and that has to be a sign I’m on the right path.’ Asked how he’d gone from outside the world’s top 100 to inside the top 25 in three years, he added: ‘My attitude and my team around me. I’ve got the desire and the fire in my belly. My manager Chubby Chandler sees it, my caddie Dave McNeilly sees it. Now a few more people have seen it and it’s a massive part of my game. Hopefully, I can show everyone else that I can do this.’ It’s an exciting thought that his whirlwind progress shows no sign of blowing itself out.
