Yours for just £16m, the first Porsche ever

- By David Wilkes

IT’S not very fast, not very powerful, and certainly not very cheap – but if you’ve got £16million to spare, the first ever Porsche could be yours.

The Type 64 belonged to its famous creator, Ferdinand Porsche, who built it in 1939 for a race from Berlin to Rome that was cancelled when war broke out.

Looking futuristic even today, the twoseat coupe has only had four owners in total. It still goes, too, although its performance is modest by modern standards, with a top speed of 99mph and an engine capable of only 32 horsepower – less than half that of a modern Ford Fiesta. Just three Type 64s were made, and this is the only survivor, having been used as a family car by Mr Porsche and his son Ferry. The car is being auctioned in Monterey, California, in August. Gord Duff, of auctioneer RM Sotheby’s, said: ‘The Type 64 helped define what a sports car is today.’ Porsche specialist Andy Prill added: ‘This is the most historically significant of all Porsche cars. It is simply incredible to find the very first Porsche in this original condition.’
