In the iron grip of snobbery

-

WHILE many people’s attention was turned to the Iron Throne on Monday night, I was gripped by another epic tale of power, BBC2’s documentary about the Iron Lady, Thatcher: A Very British Revolution. The story of how one woman challenged the male establishment and, having won, faced her own demons was worthy of any blockbusting saga.

notable was Michael heseltine. ‘ She comes from a certain social background,’ he intoned snootily. ‘With it, a lot of the characteristics that you associate with people who’ve just made it.’ (This, from a man once sneered at by a Tory grandee for having bought his own furniture.) how ghastly for him, poor dear, to have to associate with such a parvenu. Still, at least his suffering is finally over: he has just had the Conservative whip withdrawn for supporting the Lib Dems. not a moment too soon.

n GAME of Thrones the TV show may be over — but fans need not worry. We have our own real-life power tussle to look forward to: The house of Cambridge vs The house of Sussex. Who will prevail in the battle for the Instagram throne? only time will tell. But right now Kate (@ kensingtonroyal) and Meghan (@ sussex-royal) are making Cersei and Daenerys look like besties.
