Bacon butties ‘as bad for environment as driving’

IF that picture of Ed Miliband didn’t put you off bacon sarnies, maybe this will...

Campaigners say only a drastic switch to vegetarian alternatives will save the planet and improve health.

The Eating Better Alliance said a breakfast sandwich with sausage, bacon and egg has a carbon footprint equivalent to 1,441g of CO2 – the same as a 12-mile drive.

It called on shops to offer more veggie options after analysis of 620 sandwiches across major chains found only 30 per cent were free of meat, dairy and fish. The alliance, comprised of more than 60 public health experts and charities, said: ‘We need to reduce processed meat consumption by 80 per cent and increase vegetarian consumption by 86 per cent.’

It warned the 11.5billion sandwiches consumed in Britain every year ‘generate carbon emissions equivalent to the use of 8.6 million cars’.

Former Labour leader Mr Miliband last month revealed that he has now given up bacon – citing environmental reasons.
