Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, 10.30pm, ITV4

GARY OLDMAN is wonderful as understated secret agent George Smiley in this sterling adaptation of the John le Carre spy tale. It is pleasingly cool and restrained, tricky and sombre — a welcome change of pace from the hijinks of other, more action-led spy sagas.
