Newsreader Jane reveals cancer battle as she returns to BBC

- By Susie Coen

NEWSREADER Jane Hill revealed her six-month battle with breast cancer yesterday as she returned to work.

Miss Hill presented BBC1’s One O’Clock News for the first time since November.

The reason she had been missing had been unknown until she thanked NHS staff in a tweet later in the day.

Saying she had been ‘overwhelmed’ by the kind messages she had received on her return, she added: ‘I just want to say that my return wouldn’t have been possible without

our NHS. Sending love & thanks to the numerous @NHSuk staff who spotted my breast cancer, treated it, and continue to look after me. Thank you all.’

Miss Hill, who has been presenting the lunchtime news bulletin since 2003, had announced her return on Twitter yesterday morning.

She wrote: ‘Big day today. On air for the first time since November. Still... six months out of the newsroom... that’s been plenty of time to sort #Brexit, right...? See you for @bbcnews at One.’

She then joked: ‘Oh, and in true #W1A style, my pass had been cancelled and I couldn’t get into the building. #welcomeback.’

Miss Hill, 49, who is married to camera operator Sara Shepherd, began her career in BBC local radio at 16. She has presented the One O’Clock, Six O’Clock and evening bulletins as well as making regular appearances on BBC News 24.

She conducted the first BBC interview with Kate and Gerry McCann following the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine in 2007.

She revealed she was gay in the BBC’s in-house magazine in 2009, and announced her engagement to Miss Shepherd two years later. They live in north London.

A BBC spokesman said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Jane back to work.’
