Boxing governing body’s Olympic ban
THE International Boxing Association (AIBA) has been suspended from its role as the organiser of Olympic boxing at Tokyo 2020 — but the sport has escaped expulsion. The decision by the International Olympic Committee executive board, which is subject to final approval next month, follows a six-month inquiry into boxing’s troubled amateur governing body, looking at its finance, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging. There were prominent figures inside the sport who feared boxing could be removed from the roster altogether on the back of grave misgivings over AIBA. Instead, the governing body will be replaced for the remainder of the current Olympic cycle by a taskforce chaired by International Gymnastics Federation president Morinari Watanabe.
