Juncker’s sneer on Brexit deadline

- By David Churchill Brussels Correspondent

BRITAIN will probably request another brexit extension, Jean-Claude Juncker said yesterday, as he accused MPs of prioritising Theresa May’s removal over reaching a deal.

The Eu Commission chief said in an interview with CNN that he was ‘fed up’ with brexit and that the bloc’s leaders had resigned themselves to ‘waiting for the next extension’.

britain has already been granted two extensions after Mrs May’s deal was rejected twice by MPs with the current one set to end on October 31. His comments come after Mrs May’s cross-party talks with Labour collapsed and her revised offer came under fire from all sides.

Mr Juncker said: ‘What I don’t like in the british debate, is it seems more important to replace the Prime Minister than to find an agreement among themselves.’

He described Mrs May as ‘a woman who knows how to do things’ but can’t ‘succeed’, adding: ‘I like her very much. She is a tough person.’ britain will be faced with the choice of leaving without a deal or asking for another extension if a deal capable of passing through Parliament can’t be reached with the Eu.

Mr Juncker added: ‘I hope they will agree among themselves, and they will leave [the Eu] by the end of October... I think it’s their patriotic duty to get an agreement. I am getting fed up because we are [just] waiting for the next extension.’

‘We have to stop this process because it’s harming the general atmosphere in Europe. It’s harming growth perspectives worldwide.’
