Labour: We’ll teach pupils aged five about climate

- By Steve Doughty Social Affairs Correspondent

CHILDREN would be taught about climate change from the age of five under a Labour government, the party announced yesterday.

Climate change is covered by pupils over 11 during geography and science lessons. Labour education spokesman Angela Rayner said the party now intended introducing teaching on the ecological and social impact of climate change to primary schools.

She said the move would develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with future renewable energy. And she added: ‘Climate change should be a core part of the curriculum – and under a Labour government, it will be.’

The move coincides with a fresh round of school strikes today, organised by the UK Climate Strike Network, and follows both the climate strikes by school pupils and the disruptive Extinction Rebellion demonstrations in London.

A spokesman for the Department for Education said: ‘It is important that pupils are taught about climate change, which is why it is in the national curriculum... in both primary and secondary school.’
