Save bees by not mowing

-

GARDENERS are being asked to leave their lawns unmown for longer to help struggling bees and butterflies.

Conservationists say flower-studded lawns can become major sources of nectar for the insects, many of which are in decline amid a widespread loss of wild meadows and pastures.

Wildlife charity Plantlife has launched a ‘no mow May’ campaign to leave lawnmowers and strimmers in the shed during May.

It also wants people to count the flowers on their lawns over the bank holiday weekend as part of a ‘citizen science’ project to work out how important Britain’s 15 million lawns are for wildlife. More information at plantlife.org.uk/everyflowercounts
