BORN ON THIS DAY
JOSEPH ROWNTREE (1836-1925). The confectioner and philanthropist from york, a grocer’s son, founded Rowntrees & Co Ltd, which would produce Fruit Pastilles, Kit Kat, Aero and Smarties. His Quaker faith inspired him to become a model employer and help run schools and hospitals. QUEEN VICTORIA (18191901). Britain’s second longest reigning monarch (pictured) could eat a sixcourse meal in less than half an hour, much to the frustration of her rushed guests. She was 19 when she proposed to Albert, writing in her diary: ‘Oh! To feel I was, and am, loved by such an angel as Albert.’
