WHAT a lot of memories came back after reading about the generous GIs (Peterborough). I was almost nine when war was declared and lived in Southampton near the docks where my dad worked. We slept in an Anderson shelter in the garden, but weren’t afraid as we were with our parents. Our school was taken over by the Army, so no lessons for us for a while. When the GIs arrived, we were lucky to taste chocolate again. the boys preferred the gum. Just before d-day, we visited my grandparents in the suburbs. they had a garden and allotment, and we picked a big bunch of flowers to take home. As we were getting off the bus, a GI asked us politely if he could have a flower for his buttonhole for luck. Of course we agreed. I often wonder if he survived the d-day landings.
