Plastic fantastic

WHEN visiting Germany, I am struck by the fact the streets are not littered with plastic bottles and cans, unlike those in my home town.

There is a deposit scheme so you get your money back when you return the empties. People go out of their way to pick them up.

Our Government says it is considering such a scheme, but what is there to think about? It worked when I was a child, when you were paid a penny for returning an empty jam jar, and it is certainly working in Germany.
