Thatcher’s long-serving press secretary, Sir Bernard Ingham, was taken aback by Lord Helestine’s remarks about the former PM ‘coming from a certain social background’ in the BBC’s Thatcher: A Very British Revolution. ‘I was absolutely astounded at Heseltine looking down his long nose at Mrs Thatcher, coming from a corner shop,’ he says. ‘Talk about snobbery. Heaven only knows what he thinks about me, since I came from a workingcla­ss home.’
