Foreign tourists put off visiting Brexit Britain

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

TOURISTS are turning their back on Brexit Britain for a holiday.

The number of visits from overseas fell by 3 per cent in 2018 compared with the year before – dropping by 1.3million to 37.9million – even though the value of the pound was low. And there was a fall of 7 per cent in the money spent on accommodation, food, shopping and attractions, equalling a drop of £1.6billion.

The number of Britons going overseas also dropped by 1 per cent, with more people choosing staycations last summer.

Analysts believe Brexit has put foreign visitors off as it is seen to have damaged our reputation. The most tourists to the UK last year came from the US, at 3.9million.

The number of UK flights reached an all-time high yesterday, with six flights a minute being handled by air traffic control.
