per cent of patients with mental health problems are treated by GPs, not psychiatrists. yet unlike those of us working in mental health, who typically have 30 minutes to assess patients, GPs have just ten minutes. i do not know how they can be expected to do an adequate job in that time, which is why i support calls from the Royal College of General Practitioners for them to have the option of increasing slots to at least 15 minutes. this is what both GPs and those who visit their surgeries deserve.
