You doughnuts! Joyrider nicks police car as officers stop to grab a Krispy Kreme
‘An honest mistake had been made’
STEELY Seventies TV cop Jack Regan famously snarled: ‘We’re the Sweeney, son, and we haven’t had our dinner.’
Fast-forward to modern-day Peterborough, where two of his real-life counterparts found themselves similarly unsatisfied in terms of nibbles.
So they stopped off to buy doughnuts. And then things went seriously pear-shaped.
The hapless officers had left the keys in their patrol car, and while they were in the nearby Krispy Kreme store, a passing miscreant took full advantage.
Not only did he climb in and take it for a mini-joyride, he even turned on the siren as he tootled around the car park, giving a thumbs-up for good measure.
And to add to the crimefighters’ humiliation, a clip of the incident was then posted on social media. In the video the driver can be heard shouting: ‘I’m the new policeman!’ He returned the car to the officers a short time later and was given ‘words of advice’ after apologising for the stunt last week. The officers also escaped any punishment.
A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said the pair, who have not been named, had been called to deal with an incident and later stopped to get refreshments.
‘In their absence, a member of the public entered the vehicle and proceeded to drive it round the car park with the sirens and lights on,’ said the spokesman. ‘Officers noticed the vehicle and approached the member of the public as he was returning it to where he had found it and he apologised. The driver was given words of advice.
‘Upon returning to their station, the officers promptly alerted a supervisor to the incident and admitted their wrongdoing. They were given management words of advice. It was clear an honest mistake had been made.’
