‘Smart nappy’ that tells you when it needs changing

- From Emily Kent Smith in San Francisco

CHECKING a baby’s nappy usually comes down to a quick sniff.

But that could soon become a thing of the past – thanks to a ‘smart nappy’ which sends an alert to your mobile when it needs changing.

The invention by Pampers uses a sensor which automatically detects moisture and generates an alarm.

Through a tracker app linked to the sensor, parents can also check their baby’s sleep patterns and monitor when their child wakes up in the night.

The app will tell you, for example, that the baby was last changed two and a half hours ago, fed 53 minutes ago and has been awake for three minutes.

The kit comes with a video monitor and checks the room temperature and humidity. And each evening, the app gives parents a ‘day at a glance’ summary, which adds up the number of nappy changes, how many times the baby has been fed and the number of minutes he or she has slept.

The nappies are currently being tested by parents, with one, only named as Sarah, saying they had given her ‘peace of mind’.

Pampers said last night that the device was currently just launching in the US – with no date yet scheduled for it to go on sale in Britain. The firm’s latest creation comes after start- up Monit partnered with Huggies in Korea to release similar technology which tells parents when a nappy is filled.

But critics warn that apps and gadgets, increasingly popular among millennials, could stoke fear among new parents, with some panicking over simple things such as a baby moving in the night.
