33 years on from Top Gun, Cruise back in the skies for sequel
IT was one of the most iconic action films of the 1980s and helped turn Tom Cruise into a global superstar.
Now, 33 years after Top Gun was released, fans yesterday got their first glimpse of Cruise back in action as Maverick, in the hotly anticipated sequel.
The trailer for Top Gun: Maverick hints at an even more actionpacked film, showcasing astonishing aerial photography.
It opens with scenes of fighter jets, demonstrating the speed and skill of pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
The voice of Ed Harris – who plays Maverick’s commanding officer – says Maverick, who has By Eleanor Sharples TV & Radio Reporter 30 years’ experience, should be a two-star admiral, not a captain. The trailer ends with Harris saying: ‘The end is inevitable, Maverick.’ Cruise responds: ‘Maybe so, sir, but not today.’
Viewers see clips of Cruise, 57, donning the leather bomber jacket and Ray-Bans his character wore in the original. Jennifer Connelly is the new female lead, while Val Kilmer reprises his role as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.
Cruise made a surprise appearance to unveil the trailer at the Comic-Con, in San Diego.
