MPs’ bid to keep nursery paedophile behind bars

- By Ian Drury Home Affairs Editor

MPS from across the political divide have joined forces to try to keep Britain’s most notorious female paedophile in prison.

Conservative Johnny Mercer and Labour’s Luke Pollard are appalled that Vanessa George, 49, is to be released.

The Parole Board ruled last week that the former nursery worker could be freed after serving ten years for abusing up to 30 babies and toddlers in her care. It said the 18-stone paedophile had shown remorse and was no longer a major risk.

Amid mounting fury, Mr Mercer and Mr Pollard have set aside their political differences to put pressure on Justice Secretary David Gauke to urgently review the decision.

They are angry that George has stayed silent about which infants she attacked at Little Ted’s nursery in Plymouth, leaving parents in the dark.

The MPs will use a parliamentary debate on Tuesday to raise concerns about the case.

Mr Mercer said he was alarmed by the parole decision. Mr Pollard said: ‘Any system that thinks George is safe to release and ignores the concerns of victims is not working properly.’
