£32m gold bullion airport heist

- Mail Foreign Service

ARMED men dressed as police carried out a sophisticated heist at a major airport in Brazil and escaped with gold worth £32million.

Sao Paulo officials said the thieves disguised two cars to make them look like police patrol vehicles.

They were dressed as officers, covering their faces and carrying weapons.

Detectives also said an airport logistics supervisor and eight members of his extended family, including four children, had been kidnapped by the gang for 12 hours. They were expected to give evidence after being released unharmed, the force added.

The gold, which had been destined for Zurich and New York, had not been recovered last night.

The vehicles used by the gang were later found abandoned on the outskirts of the city, 12 miles from the airport.

No shootings or injuries were reported during the raid.
