Kaeso ready to make up for Ascot near miss

- By SAM TURNER

The International Stakes has produced bookmaker-friendly results in recent seasons and KAESO (Ascot, nap, 3.00) could add to those shocks today. Winners at 50-1, 40-1 and 33-1 have been commonplace in the past decade and, although the selection probably won’t emulate a surprise of the magnitude of Stamp hill or Al Muheer, his odds look enticing for a horse which tried to pull off the near impossible over course and distance in May. Attempting to make all of the running on Ascot’s seven-furlong track has proved a thankless task in plus 20-field handicaps with only Captain Ramius (2011) doing so in the past 10 years. So, it was to Kaeso’s credit that he only just failed to pull it off in the Victoria Cup, when Cape Byron proved too strong in the final strides. Kaeso’s conqueror went on to land the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and Nigel Tinkler’s Northern raider has a terrific record on straight tracks at 6-15. he also gets on well with hollie Doyle (2-4) so looks a decent wager today.
