Bury to be kicked out of league in 14 days

- By LAURA LAMBERT

BURY have been given 14 days before they face expulsion from the EFL, having failed to provide the required clarity on their financial situation. The stricken League One side’s Carabao Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday was suspended yesterday. It is their third fixture of the season to be called off. Owner Steve Dale now faces a race against time to show he can fund a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) and save the club from being kicked out. The EFL board announced yesterday they had been left with no choice but to renew the threat of withdrawal of membership because they are not willing to keep calling off matches. Debbie Jevans, executive chair of the EFL, said: ‘Despite continued efforts, regular communication and dialogue with Mr Dale and his team, the required evidence has not been forthcoming. Albeit regretfully, the board has been left with no choice but to take the action it has.’ Bury have already been hit with a 12-point deduction after entering into the CVA, which was intended to help clear some of the club’s debts. At the time, Dale commented that the approval of a rescue bid meant the club had been saved. However, the decision by the EFL yesterday afternoon dealt a severe blow to Bury’s chances of survival. Dave Giffard, chairman of the Forever Bury Supporters’ Trust, said: ‘We were probably expecting this but it’s traumatic. If the club does go it is like a death in the family, it is a horrendous thing. The 14-day deadline concentrates the mind.’ Dale has previously accused the EFL of having an agenda against the club. Representatives of Bury were unavailable for comment yesterday.
