WARBURTON MIFFED BY MISSED CHANCES

- KIERAN GILL at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium

SWANSEA knew it was a slim hope that they would finish the night top of the Championship table, given it relied on three sides — Leeds, Charlton and West Bromwich — dropping points. Yet Steve Cooper’s Swans held up their end of the bargain, as they beat Queens Park Rangers at the newly-named Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. In the end, only a Leeds victory denied them top spot, but Cooper left happy with how his side handled visiting a ground where they lost 4-0 in April. QPR manager Mark Warburton was less pleased. His staff weren’t in the best of moods, either, with first-team coach Neil Banfield shown a red card by referee Paul Tierney midway through the second half. ‘You can play well and create chance after chance but you have to put it in the back of the net,’ said Warburton. ‘Goals change games.’ This win kept up Swansea’s unbeaten start to the season. They took the lead in the 29th minute — and it came from a QPR corner. Andre Ayew stole possession inside his own half before setting up Bersant Celina, who finished off the fast break. QPR were on top in the second half and got their reward when West Ham loanee Jordan Hugill sent a glancing header into the far corner. In the 70th minute, Swansea retook the lead. Jordan Garrick won a penalty after being brought down by Yoann Barbet, and Borja Baston put the resulting spot-kick away. In the 80th minute, the win was confirmed when Sam Surridge fired home from an Ayew cross.
