WOLVES HOPE HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF IN TURIN

- JOE BERNSTEIN

WOLVES have history on their side tonight when they face Torino in the first leg of their Europa League play-off. On the club’s only other trip to Turin, they held Juventus to a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinals of the 1972 UEFA Cup, then won the second leg 2-1 at Molineux. ‘I’m sure Nuno Espirito Santo would settle for the same scorelines,’ says Jim McCalliog (right), the Wolves goalscorer in Turin. ‘Juventus had a great team then with Fabio Capello and the World Cup striker Pietro Anastasi. They finished Italian champions that season but our manager Bill McGarry had a secret weapon. When we turned up at the airport to fly out, we found out he was bringing the great John Charles with us. He got a bigger roar when he came out with us rather than the Juventus players. ‘It really gave us a lift and I have to say my goal wasn’t bad, either. A corner was half-cleared and I managed to crack it in from 22 yards.’

CHELSEA full back Davide Zappacosta has signed a one-year contract extension with the Blues but has joined Roma on loan until January. The 27-year-old, capped 16 times by Italy since his debut in 2016, signed for Chelsea from Torino in a reported £23million deal in 2017. His move to Roma includes an option to extend the loan until the end of the season.

VICTOR WANYAMA is considering a move away from Tottenham after Club Brugge offered a deal worth £13million for the midfielder. A Serie A side have also expressed interest in the Kenya midfielder with Brugge still to agree a fee or personal terms. Brugge have offered £9m plus £4m in add-ons for Wanyama, 28, and Spurs anticipate a similar offer from Italy for a player who has suffered niggling knee issues.
