We MUST do better
WHAT the hell happened at Wembley? I feel gutted we lost. Even though Phil Neville has talked about taking responsibility for the run of form we’re in, us players take responsibility, too. We are the ones who step over that white line. The coaching staff have high expectations, rightfully so. We want them to be tough on us because we are all striving to reach the top of the game. This is where Neville excels — he’s a winner and won’t accept anything less. In terms of performance, we know we need to be better. Germany are ranked second in the world and it showed in large spells. But we must keep on believing in our identity. I really think if we can work individually on how we can be better, this run of results will soon improve. Aside from the result, there were more than 77,000 people there to watch us play at the best stadium in the country. What a wonderful time to be involved in this sport. Having the chance to meet so many of the players who have pulled on the England shirt before us made the occasion even more special. We hope they know that we are proud to follow in their footsteps. We’ve been clear about our goals — it’s the Olympics in Tokyo and Euros in 2021 — and the result gives us a clear indication of where we need to be next summer. We probably need to be getting there a bit quicker than we are at the moment, but let’s not underestimate what an achievement it is to qualify. Germany didn’t make it.
