Tree you can recycle

IT’S not a traditional Christmas tree – but look closer and you’ll see this one’s green after all.

Artist Jacha Potgieter and blacksmith Gerallt Evans made the tree from 500 plastic bottles, which will all be recycled after the festive period. The frame will also be re-used.

The tree is on display at Chester Cathedral as part of the city’s Christmas tree festival, which runs until January 5.

Mr Potgieter said: ‘We seem to have lost the ability to see the destructive impact our need for instant items is having on our planet.

‘Humans buy a million plastic bottles per minute, and 91 per cent of all plastic is not recycled. Add to that the estimate that over half a trillion plastic bottles will be sold in 2020 and you can appreciate the problem.’
