GEORGE II was on the throne with Henry Pelham as prime minister. Thomas Gray’s poem Elegy Written In A Countr y Churchyard was published and William Hogarth satirised London’s bawdy side in his prints Beer Street and Gin Lane.
As 1751 was the last year that the Julian calendar was used, before being replaced by the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Day fell on Annunciation Day – March 25.
