Judges to escape scrutiny by politicians
POLITICIANS will not be allowed to influence the appointment of judges.
After a Supreme Court ruling against the Government last year, Cabinet ministers lobbied for US-style hearings to choose judiciary members.
But Downing Street last night moved to scotch speculation it could form part of a review of the constitution. The Tory manifesto contained a broad commitment to examine the ‘relationship between the Government, Parliament and the courts’ and the role of the Lords.
Judges are currently picked by an appointments commission of judges, lawyers and lay members. In the US, federal judges are selected by the President and subject to approval by Congress – so their political views are subject to scrutiny.
