Putting on an Xmas show, school with only 7 pupils
AS a seaside village with a population of 800, it is used to doing things on a small scale. But for the local school, putting on a Christmas show was a particular challenge – because there are only seven pupils.
That did not deter the children from staging a show to delight their proud parents on Wednesday. The feat was all the more remarkable because the primary school, in Abersoch, North Wales, is threatened with closure.
The seven pupils – five girls and two boys aged three to eight – performed Cardiau Nadolig, Welsh for Christmas Cards, in the school hall. The show is a tale of a postman delivering cards with the message of remembering the reason behind Christmas. Head teacher Linda Jones, the only full-time member of staff at Ysgol Abersoch, was in charge of the production, which saw pupils each take more than one role.
‘It has been one heck of a challenge, but the children were so excited,’ she said. ‘It’s a lot of hard work because they all have to play a couple of roles.
‘We’ve also got them to sing a lot of songs. They have done so well that people are amazed there are only seven of them.’ There has been a school in Abersoch since 1924. But Gwynedd Council is considering closing it because it is 27 below its capacity.
Mrs Jones – a former pupil herself – said: ‘It’s not just a school, it’s right at the heart of the community. Fingers crossed this is not the last Christmas show. If it is, we’ve made sure we go out with a bang.’
