Archbishop wrong to try to defend the Prince

-

THE Archbishop of Canterbury has said it is wrong to expect the royals to behave like ‘superhuman saints’ (Mail). No, we don’t expect Prince Andrew to be a saint, but we do expect significantly better moral behaviour from him. What a disgraceful example he has given his daughters. And the Archbishop has only proven how out of touch he is. PATRICK CHURCHILL, Goffs Oak, Herts. THE Archbishop of Canterbury is correct to state we must not expect the Royal Family to be saints. But we should expect them to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with their privileged position. Associating with a convicted paedophile is abhorrent to all people of conscience. The Prince is a ruined man who deserves all the ridicule and contempt that has been heaped on him. He has got what he deserves, but he has caused great distress to the Queen and damaged the standing of the royals.

T. GOMERSALL, Chesterfield, Derbys. IT MISSES the point to say the royals are only human and should not be judged. Highly privileged with a luxurious lifestyle, they are nothing like the rest of us. We don’t expect them to be saints, just to behave with a little grace and decorum.

C. BUTLER, Lincoln. NO, WE don’t expect the royals to be superhuman, but simply decent citizens adhering to a moral code. As the Archbishop says, everyone makes errors of judgment. But in this case the wrong path was obvious.

MARTIN WAINSCOTT, Bagshot, Surrey. WITH power and position comes responsibility. Being in the spotlight can be tedious, but the privileges far outweigh the inconvenience.

W. ABBOTT, Wem, Shropshire. WE MIGHT not expect the Royal Family to be saints, but we do expect them not to be sinners. H. SMALLSHAW, Bolton, Gtr Manchester.
