You nearly killed mummy ... girl’s poignant letter to drink-driver

- By Liz Hull

A GIRL of eight wrote a heart-breaking letter to a drunk driver who seriously injured her mother, pleading: ‘Please don’t ever do that again.’

Tomasz Niedziela, 35, was twice the drink- drive limit and travelling at 70mph on the wrong side of the road when he ploughed head on into a car driven by Amelia Elce, 29.

Covered in blood, the college tutor was taken to hospital for treatment for cuts to her head and whiplash after the smash in September.

Soon afterwards Mrs Elce’s daughter Isabelle decided to write to Niedziela in the hope of stopping him getting behind the wheel while drunk in future.

The letter, shared more than 1,400 times on Facebook, read: ‘To the man who drank the alcohol. On that night when you drank alcohol and went in your car you nearly killed my mummy!

‘She had to go in an ambulance with blood pouring out of her head, and I nearly didn’t have a mummy anymore. So please don’t ever do that again. Thank you. From Isabelle.’

The accident happened as Mrs Elce, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, drove home from a supermarket.

Niedziela was arrested at the scene and tests revealed he had 156mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg. He admitted driving with excess alcohol and was banned from the road for 20 months by magistrates in Mansfield last week. He was also fined £590 and ordered to pay a £59 victim surcharge, plus £85 costs.

Mrs Elce said that although she had recovered physically, she had been referred for counselling and feels scared when she gets into a car now.

She added that she and her husband Adam, 37, who have another daughter Chloe, six, were ‘so proud’ of Isabelle.

‘I hope Niedziela realises the impact his actions have had on me and my family,’ she said.
