IT is only five years since she made her professional acting debut. But next month Florence Pugh will be competing for an Oscar against Hollywood heavyweights including Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie.

The rising British star, 24, is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Little Women.

Yesterday she celebrated her nomination by posting Instagram pictures of the moment, wrapped in a duvet, she received the news while in bed.

The daughter of Oxford restaurateur Clinton Pugh, Miss Pugh knew she wanted to be a performer from an early age.

She attended public schools Wychwood School and then St Edward’s, at which a casting call was put out for Carol Morley’s 2014 thriller The Falling.

Miss Pugh auditioned and landed the role as pregnant schoolgirl Abbey, starring alongside Maisie Williams and Maxine Peake.

She appeared in ITV detective drama Marcella and then starred in William Oldroyd’s 2016 film Lady Macbeth.

After appearing with Sir Anthony Hopkins in a TV adaptation of King Lear she took the leading role in British horror film Malevolent before starring in 2018’s The Little Drummer Girl, the acclaimed six-part BBC adaptation of John le Carre’s thriller. Last year brought Miss Pugh worldwide attention. She starred as a young wrestler in Stephen Merchant’s Fighting With My Family, in cult director Ari Aster’s highly rated horror film Midsommar and in Greta Gerwig’s new blockbuster version of Little Women.

Since April she has been dating US actordirector Zach Braff, who, at 44, is 20 years her senior. The pair are regularly spotted out in Los Angeles together.

Miss Pugh will next appear opposite Scarlett Johansson – one of her Oscar rivals – in Black Widow, the latest Marvel superhero film, which is due for US release in May.
