Save the Red Button

-

THE bbC is switching off its news and sport red button text service this week, spelling the end of headlines, football scores, weather and travel news on our TV sets.

This service provides news that is easily readable and simple to use for those without a computer.

The bbC says it is getting rid of it in order to concentrate its funds on developing its digital services. but the people who rely on the red button do not have access to digital, could not afford it and would find it impossible to navigate.

This will further isolate those we should be caring for most. This is not public service broadcasting and panders to attracting younger audiences at the expense of those who actually use the service. I call it the Marks & Spencer virus.

I have complained to the bbC, but received only a vague response: ‘The decision was not taken lightly . . . the information provided by the red button is available on the internet . . . providing this service costs considerable resources.’

Despite my complaints, my Mp’s intervention and a Freedom of Information request, the bbC has not given one fact to support its decision. Has it done a survey or impact assessment? Does it know how many people will be affected? How does the cost saving compare with gary Lineker’s salary?

This may be an insignificant issue for the bbC, but it is another nail in the coffin of the licence fee. roll on the government’s bbC review.
