Veteran Railcard

Military personnel will be able to save a third off most train fares with a new travelcard. More than 830,000 of them will be eligible for the Veteran railcard when it is launched on November 11. it will be available for a discounted price of £21 for an introducto­ry period.

Estate changes

FROM February 6, married couples and civil partners will be able to receive up to £270,000 from their partner’s estate if he or she dies without leaving a will. Spouses can currently receive up to £250,000 automatica­lly, with any cash left over split between their partner’s children and themselves.

Bt now answers all of customer service calls in the UK and ireland, following its pledge in 2015 to bring back call centres to Britain. the company is the only major broadband company to do so.

Fuel problems

FEWER than half of car insurance policies will cover drivers who fill their vehicles up with the wrong fuel, according to Defaqto. The analysts found that 59 pc of policies exclude cover for damage caused by misfuellin­g. Driving a car with the wrong fuel can permanentl­y damage its engine.

Prime scam

AMAZON customers are being targeted by fraudsters claiming that their Prime subscripti­on is up for renewal and that they will be charged £39.99 a month. To cancel, victims are instructed to press one on their telephone keypad. But in reality, this will take them through to a conman who will try to trick them into downloadin­g a programme to gain access to their computer and personal details.

Contactles­s cards

SHOPPERS are increasing­ly relying on contactles­s card technology, with tap-and-go payments up more than 10 pc to 761 million transactio­ns in October, according to banking trade body UK Finance. it means almost half of debit card payments and a third of credit card transactio­ns are now contactles­s.

Giffgaff hike

MOBILE phone provider giffgaff has increased the cost of texts, calls and picture messages for pay-as-you-go customers. Texts have doubled in price from 5p to 10p each, calls now cost 25p a minute up from 15p, and picture messages are 30p each. Previously these cost 16p.
