Boris-baiting rapper hurls glass at angry crowd ‘after harassing host’
Now British rapper Slowthai has been branded a misogynist for making lewd comments to comedian Katherine Ryan and clashing with the crowd at the NME Awards.
The 25-year- old hurled a glass into the audience before being restrained by security guards at Brixton Acadith emy in south London on Wednesday night.
Slowthai, whose real name is Tyron Frampton, pawed host Miss Ryan and made a series of sexual comments as he accepting the award for Hero of the Year. He told the Canadian comedian: ‘If you want to do something, see me later.’
The rapper continued: ‘ She wants me to tend to her flowers. You’ve never had no one play withAcadith you the th way I play.’ l ’ Miss Ryan, 36, replied sarcastically and Laura Cochrane-Davies, wife of former NME.com editor Greg Cochrane, then shouted criticism of Slowthai’s behaviour from the audience.
He replied, ‘Thank you for ruining my speech’ and dropped his microphone into the crowd. One of them shouted abuse, throwing the microphone i h and d a glass on stage. Slowthai then poured his drink over the audience and hurled the glass at them.
He apologised yesterday for his ‘ shameful actions’ and called on NME to ‘please forward my award to Katherine Ryan for she is the hero of the year’. He said: ‘What started as a joke between us escalated to a point of shameful actions on my part. I want to unreservedly apologise, there is no excuse and I am sorry.’
Mrs Cochrane wrote on Twitter yesterday: ‘If I saw that kind of misogyny on the street, I’d call it out. Intimidation isn’t a joke.’ Others criticised Slowthai’s behaviour as ‘pure Weinstein vibes’, a reference to disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
But Miss Ryan tweeted: ‘He didn’t make me uncomfortable. I knew he had lost from the moment he opened his mouth.’
Slowthai, who grew up on a Northampton council estate, is known for his political lyrics.
At the Mercury Prize in September, he performed while holding a fake head of the Prime Minister, yelling: ‘F*** Boris Johnson... there ain’t nothing great about Britain!’
