‘We will be tested, observed and isolated’

TOM Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson are in isolation at an Australian hospital after contracting coronavirus.

The Hollywood star became ill while filming an Elvis Presley biopic on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Hanks told his Instagram followers: ‘We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches.

‘Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for coronavirus, and were found to be positive.’

He also added a photo of a medical bin and a latex glove in an apparent nod to the pictures of lost gloves he posts on social media.

He said: ‘Well... what to do next? The medical officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? ‘We’ll keep the world... updated.’ Filming of the as-yet untitled Presley film stopped after his diagnosis.

The couple, both 63, were staying at the Gold Coast’s Oracle Apartments, where a 44-year-old man from Wuhan, China was diagnosed.

Other public figures affected by the disease include Queen Letizia of Spain, who has been tested along with King Felipe VI after giving a farewell kiss to equality minister Irene Montero, who has since been diagnosed with coronavirus.

In Britain, Heart FM presenters Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts took advantage of the station’s skeleton staff to pose in the office, writing on Instagram: ‘Stripped back staff to test if we can carry on as normal!! While the cat’s away…’

Canadian premier Justin Trudeau is in self-isolation with his wife, Sophie Grégoire, over fears she caught the virus at a conference in London last week. They will remain in quarantine until she receives test results.

Robbie Williams, 46, took no chances in Melbourne, Australia, yesterday – elbow-bumping fans to minimise the risk of infection.

Meanwhile, The Who said they were left with ‘no option’ but to postpone a tour starting in Manchester on Monday and a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit gig at the Royal Albert Hall on March 28. Guitarist Pete Townshend said: ‘If one fan caught coronavirus at a Who concert it would be one too many.’
